Readings In Restaurants

Upcoming Readings in Restaurants

What is R in R?

Readings in Restaurants is a program PDC offers so that member playwrights may hear their full length work—typically one hour or longer—for the first time. The program is intended for playwrights to work out problems of plot, timing, dialogue or any other feature of their piece in order to polish it up or develop it further.

Currently, Readings in Restaurants is held once every month on a Mondays upstairs at Time, a restaurant and absinthe bar at Sansom Street between Juniper and 13th. The day and time is agreed upon between the program director and the playwright. Past RinR events are archived here and the current queue of playwrights for readings can be found here.

Playwright members that wish to participate must contact the Program Director and send a copy of the script and a synopsis. A day and time are agreed upon between the member and the Program Director. While the PDC will provide help to put the playwright in contact with actors and a director, it is up to the playwright to complete the work of casting and arranging for rehearsals.

Interim Program Director: Thomas G. Tirney. Contact him at thomastirney@gmail.com with questions or to participate.

Compensation and Payments Policy

As a service to PDC members, the Board has authorized a stipend of up to $100 for each reading to be used for payment of actors and the participating director. The PDC Board has drawn up a set of guidelines based upon Actors Equity Association rules associated with readings.

Payments and Conduct Guidelines:

  1. Playwright members shall have rehearsals prior to the reading wherein the rehearsal and reading time lasts no longer than 15 hours. Playwrights must find the rehearsal space themselves.
  2. Actors are to receive $25 for the reading and directors $50. PDC shall contribute up to $100 for each reading and will write checks to the individual actors and/or director participating.
  3. If the playwright has more actors/directors participating than can be paid for by the PDC, the playwright will have to make payment arrangements with the participants concordant with AEA guidelines.
  4. A playwright may choose to act or direct in his/her play but will not be compensated for it.
  5. A member playwright is limited to one paid RinR per year but the member may have more than one RinR event.
  6. Playwrights that cancel their event less than one week before the scheduled reading forfeit their privilege for a paid reading for 12 months. The Program Director also has the discretion to cancel an event on behalf of the playwright if the playwright does not have a complete script, does not have a cast or cannot be reached.
