About This Event:
THREE PRECIOUS RINGS is adapted from NATHAN THE WISE, a dramatic poem by Gotthold Ephraim Lessing. Nathan, a Jewish merchant of Jerusalem in the year 1192, has an adopted daughter, Recha, who is rescued from a burning house by a young Christian templar, who dislikes Jews. Grateful for his daughter's life, Nathan moves the young templar beyond prejudice--but Nathan's life is threatened when he is suspected of having stolen Recha, as a baby, from a Christian household. Nathan, however, has also won the friendship of Saladin, the Muslim sultan of Jerusalem--who opposes the efforts of the Patriarch of Palestine to burn Nathan for his alleged crime. The theme of THREE PRECIOUS RINGS is religious tolerance, forbearance, and the brotherhood of mankind under one God, as applied to Christians, Muslims, and Jews.
